Max Martinez Scholarship Fund

In 2004 the Faith Network Board of Directors approved the establishment of a scholarship fund for the purpose of providing financial aid and mentoring support for socio-economically disadvantaged but promising students, for the pursuit of post-high school education.

This Fund was named the Max Martinez Scholarship Fund in honor of, and to carry on the legacy of, the late Max Martinez.  For twenty years Max worked at Cal Berkeley in the Incentive Awards Program, an outreach to promising disadvantaged youth, encouraging them to go to college and helping them navigate the University of California admissions standards and procedures.

On May 2, 2003, Max Martinez died suddenly at the age of 56.  A memorial service was held on the Cal campus which drew a standing-room-only attendance.  Students gave heart-felt tributes to Max for his caring, consistent mentoring.  They said that if it weren’t for his support and guidance, they would not have gone to any college, let alone Cal Berkeley.  However, for many Max was more than a mentor, he was the father they never had.

Quoting from the Campus Memorial Tribute: “Max changed the paradigm for the countless young people whose lives he changed through his advocacy, his encouragement and his inspiration.  He will be remembered as a man who fiercely loved his family, had compassion for the underprivileged, and lived serving others.”
